During this lesson I’m going to add some information about reading and introduce very important rules of reading vowels.

The first rule deals with reading о

If it’s stressed it should be pronounced as о (о́ → о):

шко́ла (school)

and if it’s without stress it becomes a (o → a):

вода́ (water)

Москва́ (Moscow)

молоко́ (milk)

The second rule deals with reading e.

If it’s stressed it should be pronounced as e (é → e):

газéта (newspaper)

and if it’s without stress it becomes и (е → и):

сестра́ (sister)

река́ (river)

теа́тр (theatre)

If you’ve read and listened to previous words attentively you could notice that sometimes different consonants become “soft” as we used to say. It occurs when they are followed by  и, е, я, ю, ё  or  ь.  It’s not difficult to pronounce the so called “soft” consonants. Just smile :) while pronouncing them and everything will be Ok.

Ольга (girl’s name)

у́лица (street)

пальто́ (coat)

пять (five)

тётя (aunt)

телефо́н (phone)

нет (no)

фильм (film)

секрета́рь (secretary)

преподава́тель (professor at the University)

Are you ready for practice by yourself? Let’s go!

вода, телефон, река, Москва, преподаватель, газета, тётя, молоко, улица, театр, секретарь, сестра, школа, пять, пальто
